What We Use and Why
Essential session management
ELA Map uses session cookies set by our authentication provider (Supabase) to keep you logged in while you use the app. These are strictly necessary — without them, the app cannot function. They are not used for any tracking or analytics purpose and are deleted when your session ends or you log out.
No consent is required for these cookies because they are necessary to deliver the service.
Bot protection — Cloudflare Turnstile
Forms that anyone can reach — sign-up, sign-in, password reset, the waitlist form, and the signed-out chart preview — run a Cloudflare Turnstile check to keep automated abuse out. The widget loads from Cloudflare, which receives your IP address along with browser and device signals in order to judge whether the request is human, and it may store a short-lived token or cookie in your browser so the check does not have to be repeated. When you submit the form, we send that token and your IP address to Cloudflare for verification.
This is a security measure, not analytics: it runs on those forms whether or not you accept the cookie banner, it is not used to profile you, and Cloudflare does not receive your account, birth, or chart data through it. See the Cloudflare privacy policy.
Analytics — PostHog
We use PostHog to understand how ELA Map is being used so we can improve it — but only once you have accepted analytics. Until then PostHog is loaded in an opted-out state: it records nothing and sets no analytics cookies. If you accept, PostHog collects:
- Which pages and features you interact with
- How long you spend in the app
- Technical details about your device and browser
- General geographic region (derived from your IP address — PostHog does not receive precise GPS location)
This data is used only to improve ELA Map. It is not used for advertising, it is not sold, and it is not shared with third parties for marketing purposes.
Analytics — Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights
Our hosting provider, Vercel, offers two measurement tools we use: Web Analytics, which counts page visits, and Speed Insights, which records how quickly pages load. Both are cookieless — they store nothing on your device and do not create a persistent identifier for you. They record the page visited, a coarse country-level region, and basic device and performance details.
Like PostHog, both are treated as analytics and only run once you accept analytics in the cookie banner. Declining, or turning analytics off in your privacy settings, stops them. See the Vercel privacy policy.
Error tracking — Sentry
We use Sentry to catch and fix bugs. When something goes wrong in the app, Sentry captures what error occurred, limited context about what you were doing, and your device and browser information. This data is used only for diagnosing technical problems.
Sentry is also off until you accept error tracking: the SDK starts disabled and sends nothing, and it is switched on only when your consent for error tracking is recorded. Turning error tracking off again disables it.
What We Don't Use
- No advertising cookies. ELA Map does not serve ads and does not use advertising networks or tracking pixels.
- No social media trackers. We do not embed Facebook Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, or similar tools.
- No cross-site tracking. We do not track you on other websites.
Your Choices
Your first visit
A cookie banner appears on your first visit with three equally available options: accept, reject, or open preferences and choose analytics and error tracking separately. Until you answer it, analytics and error tracking do not run — there is nothing to opt out of yet. Rejecting leaves them off.
Changing your mind later
You can withdraw or change your consent at any time, and it takes effect immediately:
- Go to Account settings in ELA Map
- Find the Privacy Preferences section
- Toggle off "Help improve ELA Map with analytics" or "Error tracking"
Turning analytics off stops PostHog and the Vercel measurement tools from collecting anything further about your session; turning error tracking off disables Sentry. Your choice is stored in your browser, so clearing this site's stored data resets it and brings the banner back on your next visit.
Browser-level controls
You can manage or delete cookies through your browser settings at any time:
Do Not Track
Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" signal to websites. ELA Map does not currently alter its behavior in response to Do Not Track signals, as no uniform standard for honoring them has been established. We rely instead on the consent mechanism described above, which keeps analytics and error tracking off unless you turn them on.
